I've been really aching for some good sci-fi, alternate dimension, mind-bending shows lately. One of my all time favorites is Dark. I started searching "shows similar to Dark." I found a few Reddit posts that led me to recommendations of "The OA" and I remember that show coming out, but I just had never gotten around to watching it. I put it on and I was hooked. I binged it within a week. ðŸ¤
At one point, I got a little worried that it was going down a somewhat religious path. I personally don't care for movies and shows that use their platform to promote a singular religion, but I quite enjoy movies that explore the idea of religion and spirituality. I was quite pleased that it did not go down that path but rather explored the idea and centered more around the unknown aspects of inter-dimensional travel.
The OA will take you on a journey of twists and turns and when you arrive at the end, you'll have this sense that you have only just arrived at the beginning! I rewinded and rewatched the last few minutes immediately because it was so beautifully done. The series was cancelled, there was supposed to be a third season, but the way they ended the second season was so on point. Highly recommend.
After The OA, I decided to look for other Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij shows. They have been writing partners for awhile and it seems their core aesthetic is sci-fi, mystery, thriller vibes.
Next up for me was "A Murder at the End of the World" which was released in 2023. This show reminded me very much of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" or a general whodunnit.
I actually solved the major mystery very early on (like first or second episode if I remember correctly). But that didn't dissuade me from continuing on with the series. And there were other smaller mysteries that surprised me throughout the series. I thought the cinematography was well done. I later learned they filmed this series during Covid which gives it an added little meta meaning since much of the series takes place in a secluded location.
Next on my list from them I have "Another Earth", "Sound of My Voice," "East," and "The Recordist."
Brit Marling has starred in quite a few other shows/movies and she's got this quirky/mysterious nature in a lot of her characters so I might also check out some of her other films that she has acted in.
I'm really wanting more alternate dimension/sci-fi/mindfuckeries so if y'all have some suggestions let me know!
